Why pursue an
M.A.T. at Rutgers?

Rutgers University’s Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) programs are designed for those K-12 teachers who currently hold a teaching certificate or are in the process of achieving one. Our programs emphasize language, literature, and culture and provide teachers and prospective teachers with invaluable insights into the languages and cultures that they teach. Key to the programs is the required development of a teaching portfolio, in which a selected committee guides students. Pursuing an M.A.T. at Rutgers benefits teachers by enhancing their knowledge base in their area of expertise, helping them to establish strong curricular focuses, and to act as leading educators in their work environment. These degrees help teachers and prospective teachers to jump-start their career and can typically lead to higher earnings in the long term. Our programs can be completed in as little as two years.


The Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) in Chinese is primarily designed for practicing Chinese language teachers at American secondary schools so that they can further develop their professional knowledge and skills. It partially fulfills the New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) requirements to obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (CE) to teach Chinese at K-12 schools in New Jersey. The program may also be of interest to Rutgers University undergraduates majoring in Chinese or related fields contemplating a career as Chinese language teachers in K-12 schools in New Jersey and elsewhere. The M.A.T. in Chinese is a terminal degree and does not lead to Ph.D. studies.

The Masters of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) in French is a terminal degree designed for individuals who are already certified to teach French at the K-12 level and who would like to enhance their professional expertise of the language and culture. M.A.T. candidates choose from a broad range of courses on French and Francophone civilization, language, literature, and film. The course of study will include methodology, language pedagogy and French and Francophone literature and/or culture. Courses are primarily offered during the summer session in order to accommodate the schedules of teachers, but core courses can be taken during the regular academic year. Candidates wishing to take French courses during the regular academic year may do so with the permission of the Graduate Director.

The Masters of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) in German is a terminal degree intended for practicing teachers of German language, providing not only advanced language-specific training, but also broad intellectual resources to those involved in the teaching of German culture. Students are encouraged to take part in the Study Abroad program in order to immerse themselves in the German experience. The program takes into consideration the individual needs and backgrounds of candidates, tailoring course experiences to these needs. However, the general body of work usually includes: methodology of teaching; German culture and civilization, including film; German literature; departmental and extra-departmental electives; and finally, the possibility for independent studies.

The Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) program in Italian is designed for individuals who are already teaching or intend to teach Italian language and culture at the K-12 level. Candidates complete ten courses (30 credits), including the completion of a comprehensive teaching portfolio to reflect their pedagogy and new knowledge base in Italian. The Italian M.A.T. is a terminal degree that emphasizes Italian language, literature, and culture for the classroom. The program will enable candidates to achieve mastery in reading and critically analyzing literary, cultural, and cinematic texts of the Italian tradition. Candidates will also have an increased effectivity in teaching Italian language, literature, and culture, making them educational leaders in their work environments.

The Master of Arts for Teachers (M.A.T.) program in Spanish is a terminal degree designed for teachers of the Spanish language at the K-12 level and offers maximum flexibility to accommodate the busy schedules of teachers. Candidates may complete the program in online, hybrid, or on-campus courses. The M.A.T. program seeks to enhance the knowledge base and abilities of Spanish teachers to effectively teach Spanish language and culture. This goal is achieved through its courses in methods of pedagogy, language, literature, and culture. Candidates are also strongly encouraged to study abroad during the summer at our locations in either Cuzco, Peru, or Salamanca, Spain, in order to fully immerse themselves in the Spanish language and a real-life cultural experience.
