A Tuition-Free Program for Current Rutgers Graduate Students

The Summer Reading Knowledge Course Program is open to Rutgers graduate students currently registered in SAS-based degree programs that require proof of reading knowledge in a language other than English. Students from non-SAS degree programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

These courses are:

  • offered for French, German, and Italian;
    They will be conducted via remote instruction, which combines videoconferencing meetings with online assignments.
  • focused exclusively on READING skills;
    Although designed for students with no prior knowledge of the target language, teachers adapt as much as possible to the actual level of the students in class.
  • intensive in nature;
    Due to their intensity, attendance requirements are very strict! The videoconferencing meetings for these courses take place on Mondays through Thursdays, 10:00 am to 12:30 pm, starting Tuesday, May 28, through Wednesday, July 3. (NOTE: Thursday, July 4, Rutgers is closed in observance of the holiday.)
  • tuition-free, but have a non-refundable $50.00 administrative fee.

In addition, these courses:

  • carry no credits and do not appear on student transcripts;
    Nevertheless, class performance is graded, with the final grade being reported to each student's home program. (NOTE: Many graduate programs accept a final "A" in a Reading Knowledge Course as fulfillment of its language requirement. Students should ascertain their home program's policy in this matter before registering.)
  • have a maximum of 15 students admitted to each class.
    Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Courses with fewer than ten students are not expected to run. To protect the integrity of the registration process, the names of all registered students are sent to their graduate directors, and all withdrawals (with or without good cause) are also reported to them.

Students are responsible for knowing what the language requirements are for their degree programs.

Registration for the Summer 2024 Reading Knowledge Course program will be open Monday, March 25 through Friday, May 3.

Can’t attend the six-week summer program?
Graduate students whose home programs do not accept a final "A" in a Reading Knowledge Course as fulfillment of its language requirement AND/OR whose summer schedules do not permit them to attend the full six-week Reading Knowledge Course program AND/OR who want to demonstrate reading knowledge in a language other than those listed above, have the option of taking the Graduate Language Proficiency Exam to satisfy their programs’ language requirement.
