dictionariesThe Spanish Language Program offers the possibility of completing all MAT course requirements in three summers, depending on enrollment. The MAT in Spanish is designed for individuals already teaching Spanish, but also is open to prospective teachers at the K-12 school level. Credits from World Languages Institute courses may be applied towards state certification and/or continued professional development. Teachers are required to complete successfully at least two Spanish courses in the World Languages Institute before applying to the MAT program. Methods of teaching Spanish to both English speakers and those coming from a Hispanic background, with special emphasis given to K-12. Emphasis on curriculum development, uses of technology, and software applications. Review of theoretical resources. Conducted in Spanish.

This 10-unit course introduces students to comparisons of and contrasts between the Romance languages. It will present students with the origins of language families (Indo-European, Hamito-Semitic, Sino-Tibetan, Ural-Altaic, etc.) and of Italic and Latin, the parent varieties of Romance. The class will treat each Romance language individually and comparatively to explain the notion of its derivation from a diasystem interrelated at the linguistic, aesthetic, cultural, literary, and historical levels. Conducted in Spanish.

En este curso estudiaremos filmes que representan y/o informan ciertos debates y conflictos ambientales contemporáneos en América Latina. Estos filmes miran los problemas desde una perspectiva atenta a la relación de la sociedad y los individuos, y hasta del propio cine, con la naturaleza. Invitan al espectador a reconocer intersubjetividad y hasta agencia política a animales, plantas, objetos, paisajes, el clima, espíritus, etc. Finalmente, narran las consecuencias en el medio ambiente de los modelos de crecimiento económico vigentes, y cómo esta alteración de la interacción entre humanos y no-humanos afecta el tejido social mismo.Temas comunes en estos filmes son: la relación entre injusticas sociales y degradación ambiental; el rol de las multinacionales y del estado; la preocupación con el calentamiento global, la protección de la biodiversidad y la agricultura transgénica; cómo imaginar ecologías urbanas, y cuál es la participación política de cosmologías no-modernas en las que lo no-humano no está bajo el dominio de lo humano.
